Help
The short answers. The full walkthrough and every question are in the app, under Settings › Help & FAQ, in each of its languages. Anything else, email support@madebyenki.com.
Getting started
- Continue with Apple or Continue with Google. There is no password. Your books are created on the server when you sign in, so they follow you to a new phone.
- Your first business
- Onboarding asks for the business, who owns it and what it sells, then offers a personal book. Add more businesses later in Settings › Businesses, up to 10 books.
- Get set up
- Home starts with three steps: add a bank or card account, import a statement, add the first receipt. The card goes away when they’re done, or when you close it.
Receipts
- Adding a receipt
- Add › Scan for paper, or pick a photo or a PDF. The phone reads the shop, date and total; Plainbooks suggests the business and category; you check and save. A receipt marked “read by AI, please check” had a weak read and deserves a second look.
- Offline
- Receipts captured offline wait in the outbox and upload when you’re back, even if the app was closed. Other changes (manual entries, edits, imports) need a connection.
- Rules
- Correct a shop’s category twice and Plainbooks offers a rule. Rules are listed in Settings › Rules; to change one, delete it and accept the next offer.
Statements and payouts
- Bank and card statements
- Add › Import a statement with a CSV from your bank or card. Plainbooks suggests which column is which and shows a preview; rows you leave out are never sent. Duplicates already in the account are skipped.
- Payout reports
- Stripe’s balance export, Shopify Payments payout transactions and the App Store financial report are recognised by their columns. Sales come in at the full amount with each fee as its own expense; refunds as refunds; the payouts themselves are left out, since they only move money to the bank.
Books and money
- Kinds of money
- Income, expenses and refunds count in profit. Owner contributions and draws, transfers between the business’s own accounts, tax payments and personal spending never do.
- Paid personally
- Mark an expense as paid personally and Plainbooks records the expense and your owner contribution together.
- Accounts and credit cards
- Balances are the opening balance plus everything recorded since; nothing is connected to a bank. A card purchase adds to what you owe; paying the card from the bank is a transfer, not an expense.
- Categories
- Business books come with the Schedule C lines; meals count 50%. Your own expense categories can be set to 100%, 50% or 0% deductible in Settings › Businesses › Categories.
Reports and tax
- The tax view
- This year’s expenses by Schedule C line, and how much to set aside at the rate you choose. With a rate set, the phone reminds you a week before each federal estimated-tax date.
- Sharing a report
- The profit and loss has a Share button that makes a PDF on the phone. Widgets show this month’s or this year’s profit on the Home Screen.
- Not tax advice
- Plainbooks adds up what you filed, by the lines on the form. Whether something is deductible, and how much, is for you and your accountant.
Year end and export
- Locking a year
- Reports › Year end lists what to check, then locks the year. A locked year is read-only; unlocking asks for Face ID and a reason, both kept in the history.
- Exporting for your accountant
- Settings › Export builds a zip in the Files app, under On My iPhone › Plainbooks: a README, the profit and loss, the transactions and categories as CSV with each category’s Schedule C line, every document, and the receipt photos if you turn them on. Share it however you like; exports leave the phone after 7 days.
Account and billing
- Plans
- $9.99 a month, or $79.99 a year with a 14-day free trial. A new account has 7 days to start one. Manage or cancel in your Apple Account’s Subscriptions settings.
- When a plan ends
- Your books become read-only: view, search and export still work. They’re kept 30 days after an unpaid trial and 6 months after a paid plan, with a banner and two emails before anything is deleted.
- Deleting your account
- Settings › the account card › Delete account. Everything is deleted within 24 hours and your Sign in with Apple connection is revoked. Cancel the subscription separately with Apple.
- Face ID
- Settings › Face ID & Security locks the app on open and covers the books whenever the app isn’t active. Widgets still show their numbers; opening anything from a widget waits for Face ID.
